The Shitamachi Museum does offer a guided tour in English free of charge. I recommend it. The man who led me around was very knowledgeable and charming. I purchased a tenugui and a couple of post cards from their little shop at the end of the tour (a gesture to thank him for the photos that he allowed me to take even though "no photography" notices are posted) and he in turn gave me an origami box as a gift.
